!!!, which can be pronounced by repeating any one-syllable percussive sound three times (e.g., “chk chk chk”), formed in 1996 after the demise of the Yah Mos; while on tour, members of that post-hardcore act envisioned forming a band oriented toward danceable music, and once they returned to their native Sacramento, California, they turned the concept into an actual group. The band quickly became an eight-member ensemble: Nic Offer on vocals, Mario Andreoni on guitar, Justin van der Volgen on bass, Dan Gorman on trumpet and percussion, Tyler Pope on guitar, Allan Wilson on saxophone and percussion, Mikel Gius on drums, and Jason Racine on percussion.

Me and Guiliani Down by the School Yard!!! spent their first few years developing their groove-oriented, post-punk-indebted sound while playing local house parties. At the same time, Offer, Pope, and van der Volgen were in a dub-inflected instrumental outfit called Out Hud. After releasing a 7″ on Hopscotch and a split single with Out Hud in 1998, the two bands issued a split full-length, a 1999 release jointly sponsored by Gold Standards Laboratories (a Sacramento label) and Zum (a San Francisco zine). After extensive touring of the States, !!! released a self-titled album on GSL in December 2000. Soon after, the band reentered the studio and recorded enough material for a follow-up. Some members moved to New York, but the group remained intact and active as it booked regional tours. In 2003, the band issued Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story), its first release — a ringing, hypnotic single nine minutes in length — for Touch & Go. It set the tone for 2004’s politically charged Louden Up Now, mixed to bold effect by Maurice Fulton. The relatively lighthearted Myth Takes and Strange Weather, Isn’t It? (their first for new label Warp) were the band’s third and fourth albums, released respectively in March 2007 and August 2010.
Thr!!!er Before their next album, there were some major personnel shifts, as longtime member Pope departed and was replaced by bassist Rafael Cohen, and drummer Paul Quattrone joined. The group’s fifth album, Thr!!!er, was released in April of 2013 and featured production by Spoon’s Jim Eno and vocals from Sonia Moore, a onetime backing vocalist for MC Hammer. They followed it up with an EP of remixes, R!M!X!S, later that year. To prep for the next album, Offer retreated to his N.Y.C. bedroom studio, working with Cohen and eventually finishing 40 songs. They cut it down to the best 30 and hit studios in N.Y.C., Los Angeles, and Austin to record them with help from Eno again, as well as Chris Coady and Patrick Ford, though most of the album was self-produced by the band. As If was released by Warp in October of 2015.
Shake the Shudder!!!’s next album was hatched in a practice space in Barcelona, where they began working out songs during lengthy recorded jam sessions before heading back to their N.Y.C. studio with Patrick Ford, where the core group of Offer, Cohen, Quattrone, Andreoni, and Gorman was augmented by a host of guest artists like Lea Lea, Meah Pace, Nicole Fayu, Cameron Mesirow, and Molly Schnick. The songs began to come together in late 2016 when the band, unnerved and inspired by the political climate, decided to head back to the studio, strip the nearly finished tracks down to the basics, and essentially start over. They recorded 17 songs in four days, then sent them to producers Joakim, Phil Moffa, and Matt Wiggins to give them extra dancefloor punch. The resulting record, 2017’s Shake the Shudder, was the band’s slickest and most focused to date.

Description:

Formed in Brighton in 2011 after brothers Thom and Max Weeks’ hardcore outfit Kasa wound down, the pair hooked up with fellow Cornishman and ex-Rasputin member Charlie Piper after he posted on Facebook about wanting to start a new band. A love of skateboarding, gruff punk, and partying would influence the Gnarwolves’ sound and with D.I.Y shows in Brighton becoming local legend, the group started to earn themselves a considerable following. The self-released tape, Fun Club, appeared in 2011 and was followed by the vinyl-only CRU EP in 2012 on Tangled Talk, which was eventually reissued on CD by Big Scary Monsters later that year. Touring Europe in 2012 with the likes of the Wonder Years, the Story So Far, and Lower Than Atlantis, as well as their own headline slots, the band released the Funemployed single on German label Day by Day in mid-2013. At the beginning of 2014, American label Pure Noise collected all of Gnarwolves’ previous releases on The Chronicles of Gnarnia, while the trio announced that their full-length debut album would be released toward the end of that year. After multiple tours and a three-year break, Gnarwolves returned to the studio, emerging with their sophomore album, Outsiders, in 2017. ~ Rich Wilson

Description:

While Canadian punk provocateurs Fucked Up play aggressive and incendiary music, that’s hardly where their desire to stir up trouble begins and ends. The group strays far from the standard template of four-four punk stomp, incorporating extended instrumental workouts, unusual arrangements, and lengthy experimental passages along with the furious guitars and ranting vocals. While Fucked Up have paid homage on record to pioneering anarchist movements and creative and political troublemakers of all stripes, they’ve also flirted with fascist images and obscure mysticism in a bid to puzzle and confront their audiences. And despite their fondness for lengthy musical statements, Fucked Up waited until four years into their recording career to record a full-length album.

Fucked Up formed in Toronto, Ontario, in 2001; the group members, who used pseudonyms as well as their real names, were Damian Abraham (aka Pink Eyes and Father Damien) on lead vocals, Mike Haliechuk (aka 10,000 Marbles) on lead guitar, Josh Zucker (aka Concentration Camp and Gulag) on rhythm guitar, Sandy Miranda (aka Mustard Gas) on bass, and Jonah Falco (aka Mr. Jo and Guinea Beat) on drums. In 2002, the band released its first record, a vinyl 7″ called No Parasan distributed by Deranged Records. Over the next four years, Fucked Up would release a steady stream of singles, EPs, and cassettes, most notably the infamous Looking for Gold vinyl 12″, which featured the epic-length title song (which incorporates massive guitar overdubs, extended drum solos, and a whistled coda); rather than deal with the expense of the EP’s elaborate package, the band opted to post the record online rather than go into a third pressing.

Fucked Up’s purposefully obscure and cryptic lyrical concerns led some music journalists to suggest the band was playing a bit too lightly with fascist ideology, an accusation the group seemed to cite when it featured a photo of a Hitler Youth rally on the sleeve of a split single with Haymaker. (The bandmembers also frequently cited their manager David Eliade as a key lyrical influence, but if he’s an actual Malcolm McLaren-style Svengali or a fictional creation in the manner of Randy Fitzsimmons is anyone’s guess.)

Hidden World In 2006, Fucked Up released their much-anticipated full-length album, Hidden World, through Jade Tree, a musically ambitious collection that featured 13 songs in 72 minutes, though its release didn’t stop their ongoing parade of singles and EPs, eight of which appeared the same year as the album. By 2008, the band had accumulated nearly 40 records to its name, mostly limited vinyl singles, and a third guitarist had been added to the lineup, going by the name of Young Governor, L’il Bitey, and/or Bad Kid; his real name is Ben Cook. In March, a chaotic performance on a pedestrian bridge at South by Southwest added to the hype for Year of the Pig, the second in their series of 12″ Zodiac EPs celebrating the Chinese New Year, which was released in mid-July that year.
The Chemistry of Common Life Just three months later, the band released its first full-length for Matador, The Chemistry of Common Life, which earned the band the Polaris Music Prize, an award given to the year’s outstanding Canadian album. The 2011 follow-up, David Comes to Life, was a highly conceptual beast of a double album, nearly 80 minutes in length, ushered in by several accompanying singles and a limited Record Store Day vinyl companion piece titled David’s Town. While not as conceptually daring, the band’s fourth album, 2014’s Glass Boys, found Fucked Up continuing to evolve their sprawling sound with an album of personal and self-reflective material. In 2015, Fucked Up released yet another EP, Year of the Hare, their seventh Zodiac series installment, and an eighth, Year of the Snake, appeared in 2017. – Artist Biography by Mark Deming

Description:

Every now and then a band comes along and speaks to the hearts of adolescents everywhere, as the true voice of their community. In the punk rock community, The Flatliners are that band right now. Their anthemic punk rock classics quickly catapulted them to the top of the scene, and the bands who inspired them quickly became their peers. In an age when overnight internet sensations are an everyday occurrence, it’s hard to find a band that’s grown organically, using word of mouth and non-stop touring to win fans over one show at a time. Since 2002, The Flatliners have been busy touring the world over with the likes of NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise and Hot Water Music, as well as multiple stints on the Vans Warped Tour. “Inviting Light” is the band’s 5th full-length album and is easily the band’s strongest material to date. “Inviting Light” includes 12 melodic, catchy songs that will stay stuck in your head for months to come. It’s the band’s most mature effort, as it leans more rock than punk, but it doesn’t alienate the band’s core audience. It showcases them at the top of their game, as true masters of their craft. To support the release, The Flatliners will be touring North America with Weezer, followed by a European tour with The Menzingers. The band will continue to tour relentlessly throughout the release. The Flatliners have found a way to keep progressing, while also staying true to the sound that made them
